How to Buy Graded Comics

Graded comics are raw books that a third-party company has inspected, scored, and sealed in a hard case (a “slab”). The two names you will see most often at Chicks Comics are CGC and CBCS.

What the numbers actually mean

Both companies use a 10-point scale. A 9.8 is Near Mint/Mint — sharp corners, bright pages, almost no wear. A 9.4 is still a high-grade reader that most collectors are happy to own. Mid-grades (6.0–8.0) are often better value if you want the story or a key appearance without paying a gem-mint premium.

• 9.8: investment and display copies; pay a premium only for keys and first appearances.
• 9.4–9.6: excellent look, usually a better price-to-condition ratio.
• Signature Series: the autograph was witnessed by the grading company. That matters more than a random signed raw book.

CGC vs CBCS

CGC has the larger resale market, so comparable 9.8s often sell faster. CBCS is widely accepted and sometimes cheaper for the same numeric grade. Buy the book and the grade, not the logo — then check recent sold listings before you stretch.

At our shop on Phoenix Lane you can inspect the case, label, and inner well before you buy. Online listings include the grade, grader, and photos of the actual copy. We do not list counterfeit slabs.

3. Compare against recent sales, not asking prices.
